The Trajan markets were part of an extensive complex built at the beginning of the II century by the emperor Trajan after the conquest of Dacia, nowadays Romania.
They were probably projected by the famous architect Apollodorus of Damascus at the height of the Roman empire. He cut the Quirinal hill in a semicircular shape to create enough space for the markets and the Trajan square. The area housed offices and shops, and today it still preserves the big entrance hall, the main street called via Biberatica, and ancient shops. The Trajan complex also housed a basilica and the Trajan column, which can still be seen on the side of the markets. |
